In order to exhibit the archaeological riches of the region, it was decided to establish the Adana Museum of Antiquities in 1924, and Halil Kamil Bey, known as Alyanak, was appointed as the museum director. Cafer Ağa Madrasa, located near Taşköprü, was first deemed suitable for the museum building.
After serving for a while, the museum became unusable and was moved to the Greek Church after the building was demolished. In 1937, when Museum Director A. Rıza Yalgan added a new section to the museum in order to explain the ethnography of Çukurova, it was named Adana Archeology and Ethnography Museum. Thus, A. Rıza Yalgan established the first open-air museum in our country.
Adana House
The building, which has served as the Adana Museum since 1950, functioned as a museum warehouse when the Archeology Museum was opened in 1972 and many works were moved to the new museum. With the restoration work in 1983, it regained its function as a Museum under the name of Ethnography Museum. Due to the initiation of restoration works in the building by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in 2008, the Ethnographic works were moved to the existing Archeology Museum and the restoration works, which started in 2013, were completed in 2015 and opened at the mass opening ceremony held by our President in Adana on 07.04.2017, Adana Kuruköprü Memorial Museum and Traditional Adana House. was put into service.
Thanks to its fertile lands and favorable geographical location, Çukurova and its surroundings have hosted many civilizations. The Tanzimat Edict, declared in 1839, provided non-Muslims with the opportunity to govern themselves and build schools and places of worship. During this period, a remarkable number of churches were built in Anatolian cities.
Adana Greek Church
Adana Greek Church is one of the religious buildings built in this process. Most of the churches in Adana and its surroundings were built with a three-nave basilica plan, like the Greek churches of Istanbul and the Ottoman period churches in most of Anatolia. The building has a rectangular plan in the east-west direction from the outside and a three-naved basilica plan type from the inside.
The building area is entered through a rectangular door in the southwest direction. There is a sun (brightness) symbol on the inside of the triangular pediment above the entrance. The iron, double-winged door surface is divided into rectangular and square areas and a floral decoration is placed in the middle. Between the door and the large arch at the top, there are ornamental elements in the form of column capitals, where the small eyebrow arch in the middle meets. According to the nine-line Greek inscription on the marble slab above the western door of the building, the building was built by the Greek community in 1845.
