This magnificent place not only mesmerizes with its history but also offers unforgettable experiences with the activities and areas waiting to be explored. In this article, I will touch on the historical significance of Çatalhöyük, share the places to visit there, activities to do, and practical travel tips. This way, you'll have a clear idea of what to consider while discovering this ancient settlement. If you're ready, let's begin a historical journey!

Çatalhöyük
Çatalhöyük has been inhabited for about 2,000 years. The area became more interesting during the Neolithic period, as people began to settle here. The developments in this area, particularly in art and cultural traditions, have significantly influenced today’s world. It is estimated that more than 8,000 people lived here. Unlike other Neolithic settlements, Çatalhöyük contains what seems to be an extraordinary degree of urbanization for its time. It is also suggested that the people living here were the first to engage in agriculture. Because of this, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 2009. In 2012, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming a globally recognized site.

Historical Significance of Çatalhöyük
Çatalhöyük has always fascinated me. This ancient settlement is one of the most important archaeological sites from prehistoric times and has a rich cultural heritage that sheds light on the development of human history. People lived here from 7500 BC to 5700 BC, and the site holds valuable information regarding the evolution of agriculture, animal husbandry, and social structures.
The settlement consists of small houses that were not surrounded by walls but instead were built with interconnected structures. This arrangement provides insight into how society lived together and developed social relationships at that time. Additionally, the wall paintings and symbols found here offer important clues about the beliefs and rituals of the people. Çatalhöyük is not just an archaeological site, but also a journey into history, carrying traces of the past to the present.
What most impresses me is that research at Çatalhöyük is still ongoing, with new discoveries helping us better understand the lifestyle of ancient people. Therefore, when I visit Çatalhöyük, I’m not just thinking about history; it leads me to deep reflections on human conditions. In this sense, it’s not just a sightseeing spot for me, but a place of historical discovery.
East Çatalhöyük is considered the most advanced Neolithic settlement found to date. Excavations were carried out by James Mellaart in 1958 and continued until 1965. In 1993, Cambridge University resumed excavations, primarily in the eastern area. These excavations continued until 2018.
In the western part, work started in 1961, and surface surveys of the west side were also conducted in 1993.
Çatalhöyük remained inhabited until the Bronze Age. The fertility of the land for agriculture is considered an important factor in why this area was chosen for settlement.
