History of Smyrna
Excavations on the city of Smyrna were started jointly by John M. Cook and Ekrem Akurgal in 1948. The works were taken over by Meral Akurgal since 1993; It continued under the chairmanship of this name. Smyrna, which has been among the settlements of people since the 3rd century BC; It is one of the places with the densest urban settlements of its period. It is also stated that the population boomed especially between 650 and 546 BC.
Smyrna in the classical period; It was founded on the ridge of Pagos in accordance with the decision made by Alexander the Great. After its establishment in this period, it spent its most popular times during the Roman Empire. The part located within the borders of Konak district is expressed as the largest protected area. It is also stated that the Agora from the Roman period is the strongest structure. On the other hand, it is also stated that the city was devastated by a great earthquake in 178 AD and was rebuilt afterwards. After the arrangement and excavation works started again in 1996, a large part of the city was unearthed.
The ancient theatre, Western Stoa, Stadium and Temple of Zeus Akraios are also waiting for their visitors in Smyrna. Agora ruins are also publicly accepted by Izmir Municipality. It is also known that this area has been nationalized and is operating.
