İznik, Roma İmparatorluğunun önemli nekropollerinden birisi. İmparatorluk ordularında görev yapan önemli komutanlar buraya gömülmüşler. Şehri çepe çevre saran surların kitabelerinde Yunanca bilgiler mevcut. Hatta o dönemde yapılan su kemerleriyle şehre uzak mesafeden su getirilmiş. İlginç olan ise kaynağın yanına yapılan büyük sarnıçla su önce dinlendirilmiş daha sanra şehir şebekesine verilmiş. Hayati değeri olan suyun titizlikle kullanılması konusunda halka sürekli talimatlar verilmiş.
