Fethiye Museum
Fethiye is a city built on Telmessos, the westernmost city of the ancient Lycia region, and is the port city of the Teke Peninsula. The first museum was started to be created in 1962, with the initiatives of Recep Ceylan, the district governor of the time, with artifacts collected from the city and its surroundings, which was restructured after the 1957 earthquake. The museum, which first operated as a Warehouse Museum in two small rooms under the current municipality building, has been hosting its visitors in its current location since 1987. The majority of the exhibited works consist of works brought to the museum by citizens from Fethiye and its surroundings and works found during excavations in the museum's area of responsibility. The museum has sections consisting of archaeology, ethnography and garden display.
The works in the archeology department date back to B.C. Sculptures dating back to the 3rd millennium BC until the end of the Byzantine Period are exhibited in groups consisting of statue heads, ceramic, glass and metal works and coins. There are also inscriptions in the Archeology Hall that provide important information about the history and culture of the region. The most important of these inscriptions is the Trilingual stele, which played an important role in deciphering and reading Lycian, the language of the people of the region in the classical age. In the ethnography section, folkloric artifacts (textiles, clothes, embroidery, jewelry, ornaments and household items) specific to the Teke region are exhibited. One of the works in this section is the display of a working loom used in dastar weaving around Üzümlü. In the museum garden, there are large-sized stone works on open display. These include sarcophagi, inscriptions and the Monument of Iraza, one of the important figures of Lycian culture.
