Edirne Archeology and Ethnography Museum has an additional section consisting of two sections and garden exhibits. The museum, whose construction started in 1969, was opened to visitors on June 13, 1971.
The museum is located 50 meters from the eastern gate of the Selimiye Mosque and is adjacent to the area where Ottoman period tombstones are exhibited.
At the entrance of the garden, there is an arrangement decorated with Aeolian column capitals belonging to the temple from Enez. The southern part of the garden is dedicated to water culture and is equipped with works reflecting the water culture of the Ottoman Period. Elements of aquatic culture such as Edirne's fish ponds and aviaries are also exhibited in this area.
There are two main departments in the museum building: Archeology and Ethnography. In the ethnography hall, traditional clothes specific to the Balkans, various examples of calligraphy, carpets and rugs, and spaces such as the Edirne Bridal Room and Living Room, as well as some special items used by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk during his visit to Edirne are exhibited.
Edirne Archeology and Ethnography Museum
The exhibits in the archeology department start with fossils obtained from excavations in Edirne and its immediate surroundings. These fossils include defenses, jawbones, teeth and vertebrae belonging to rhinoceros and horse species.
The funerary stelae depicting the Thracian Horseman, located among the museum's marble statues and stelae, are among the regional artifacts and are exhibited together with other finds from the excavations in Edirne.
Enez was an important port city connecting the Balkans, Anatolia and the Aegean in ancient times. Excavations and research that have been ongoing since 1971-72 show the development of the region from prehistoric times to the present day. Among the finds from the Enez excavation, which constitute an important part of the museum, there are figured amphorae, terracotta figurines, ceramic works, marble statue pieces, stelae and various jewelry.
In addition to the regional artifacts seized from Kapıkule, İpsala and other border gates, various artifacts belonging to Anatolian civilizations are also exhibited in the museum. These works include jewelry, terracotta and glass works, as well as sculptures, stelae and coins.
