Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum was founded in 1927 by architect Arif Hikmet Koyunoğlu under the direction of Atatürk, the Great Leader of the Turkish Nation. The museum, which was opened after the building was repaired in 1980, quickly became an institution with all the features of a modern museum. Today, it serves as an art center exhibiting the most important works of artists who played a major role in the development of Turkish painting and sculpture.
Museum of Painting and Sculpture
The collections of works of art and their classifications, reflecting the formation and development periods of Turkish plastic art, are enriched every year with donations from the state, domestic and foreign embassies, and new acquisitions. At the same time, the plastic arts library, which fills the gap in this field, responds to the needs of researchers working in this field as well as the archives of Turkish artists.
The preservation of works of art, one of the most important responsibilities of the museum, is carried out by using the methods that provide the most successful results to solve problems arising from factors such as temperature and humidity. Despite all the protection measures, there is a separate section within the museum created by experts for possible damages.
History of Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum
During the renovations of the building in 1980 and the following years, great importance was given to the creation of painting, sculpture and ceramics workshops serving amateur and professional artists. For security reasons, the entire building is equipped with closed-circuit television system, ultrasonic and fire alarm systems, so that every part of the museum can be controlled. In line with the public's demand for museum facilities, special workshops for painting, original writing, Turkish Decorative Arts, ceramics and sculpture are planned to be opened as soon as possible.
Painting, sculpture, ceramics, writing arts and photography exhibitions planned to be held in Turkey within the framework of international cultural agreements are exhibited in three galleries reserved for permanent exhibitions. Therefore, works of foreign countries should be reported to the Turkish State. In addition, Turkish works of art selected from museum collections are exhibited in foreign countries within the framework of international agreements. In addition to these exhibitions, personal exhibitions and competition exhibitions are among the other activities of the museum organized by the General Directorate of Fine Arts.
The historical large hall, which was transformed into its original state during repairs, is used for concerts, theater plays and cinema screenings. This institution, which serves the public with its modern cafeteria, sales stores and sound system that includes all the natural features of Contemporary Art Museums, goes beyond an exhibition palace for old works of art.
